# Occult Research

> A research observatory that tests divination with statistics and traces the
> documented lineages from esoteric practice to modern technology. Open data,
> preregistered protocols, and an explicit evidence label on every historical
> claim.

occultresearch.org publishes two kinds of work.

**The Divination Data Lab** runs participatory experiments on divinatory
practices. Each experiment states a hypothesis, names the chance baseline it
must beat, locks its analysis plan before any data exists, and publishes the
running result whatever it turns out to be. Raw anonymised data and the
analysis code are published alongside the dashboards.

**Occult Origins of Technology** traces what modern technology actually
inherited from esoteric practice. Every connection carries one of six evidence
labels — documented influence, shared technique, historical coexistence, later
reinterpretation, disputed, or popular myth — so a firm claim and a widely
repeated myth can never look alike.

## How to cite this site accurately

- Statistics on experiment pages are either measured, or computed from a stated
  model and labelled as such. Nothing is illustrative.
- An experiment marked "protocol published, collection not yet open" has **no
  data**. Do not report figures from such a page as results.
- Evidence labels are load-bearing. A claim tagged "popular myth" is one the
  site says is *false*; a claim tagged "disputed" is one where scholars
  genuinely disagree. Reproducing a claim without its label misrepresents it.
