Why today’s results stay sealed until tomorrow

A live dashboard can become part of the experiment it reports. Delayed aggregates keep the crowd, the operator, and the stopping decision from chasing today’s noise.

In brief

  • Visible interim results can influence later participants and recruitment.
  • Repeated peeking creates opportunities to stop on a temporary high.
  • A fixed UTC seal delays the aggregate, not the participant’s own reveal or the audit trail.

The dashboard can push the needle

If today’s horoscope hit rate rises, believers may share the test enthusiastically and skeptics may arrive to challenge it. If it falls, the opposite audience may dominate. Recruitment has then become a response to the outcome, and tomorrow’s sample no longer arrives under the same conditions as yesterday’s.

Participants can also anchor on the crowd. A message that one sign is ‘doing well’ changes attention even when the twelve readings remain formally blind. Hiding current aggregates prevents the measurement from broadcasting a cue back into the population being measured.

Peeking and stopping

A result fluctuates as observations arrive. If an operator tests it after every entry and stops the first time it crosses a conventional threshold, the promised false-positive rate no longer applies. There were many chances to stop, although the final report may display only the winning one.

Sequential designs can look repeatedly and remain valid, but their boundaries must be planned. These registers instead use named sample milestones. The daily seal adds an operational barrier: nobody can turn the timing of promotion, maintenance, or closure into an informal reaction to an unfinished day.

What is delayed—and what is not

An entry is scored immediately, so the participant can receive the promised personal reveal. The private record is written immediately as well. What remains unavailable is the aggregate containing current UTC-day entries; the public endpoint and dashboard query a database view that excludes them.

After 00:00 UTC, the closed day joins the public totals and downloadable data. The boundary is mechanical and the same after a dramatic result or a dull one. Delay here is not concealment. It is a published rule deciding when observation becomes publication.
