The dead were the first special effect. For thirty years the most convincing ghosts in Europe were projected ones, sold as necromancy by a showman who then explained the trick. The apparatus he used became the projector, and the way he made one image melt into another is still called a dissolve.

   Back-projection onto a translucent screen, invented to hide the lantern from a phantasmagoria audience, is the same method used for process shots in studio film-making.Continuity of method is uncontested; a direct line of transmission between the two industries is not claimed here.
