Trithemius’s Angels → Cryptography

A cipher wearing a grimoire. The Steganographia addresses spirits, hours and planetary rulers while hiding operational messages inside the invocations. Solving the ciphers rescued a cryptographic book from the demonology shelf—but did not make its occult language historically meaningless.

REVISED 2026-08-21 · 10 THE CLAIMS, LABELLED

How to read the labels

Documented influenceA traceable line — texts, apparatus, or people demonstrably carried the practice forward.
Shared techniqueThe same method on both sides of the divide; transmission is likely but not fully papered.
Historical coexistenceSame rooms, same decades; influence unproven.
Later reinterpretationA modern meaning projected back onto the old practice.
DisputedSerious scholars disagree. Both readings are shown.
Popular mythWidely repeated; contradicted by the record.

The balance sheet

Retained by the cipher

  • Cover textan innocent or distracting surface carries a message whose existence is meant to pass unnoticed
  • The word steganographycovered writing still names the field, although its media and threat models changed
  • Polyalphabetic tablesthe tabula recta became a reusable cryptographic instrument beyond Trithemius’s book
  • The adversarial readerthe design begins from what an interceptor can see, suspect and test

Left in the conjuration

  • Angels as a communication network
  • Planetary hours as cryptographic security
  • A direct technical line to Internet encryption
  • The solution erases the occult setting

A successful cover text has two readers: one sees an invocation, another sees a procedure and a message. Cryptanalysis can recover the second reading. Historical interpretation still has to explain why the first reading took this particular form.
