Llull's Wheels → Combinatorial Logic

The machine that was an argument. A 13th-century missionary built paper discs to generate every combination of God's attributes, and argued that reasoning itself could be turned by a handle. He was wrong about what his machine proved. He was right that a machine could do it.

    Llull's Art is a genuine ancestor of modern computing rather than a structural resemblance noticed after the fact.Bonner (2007) and Fidora & Sierra, eds., Ramon Llull: From the Ars Magna to Artificial Intelligence (2011) argue for real influence through Leibniz; others read the resemblance as retrospective. The documented chain runs Llull → Leibniz; from Leibniz onward it is unambiguous, and it is the first link people overstate.

    The Art was a memory system, in the tradition of the memory palace.That reading comes largely from Bruno's Renaissance use of Lullian wheels and from Yates, The Art of Memory (1966). Llull's own texts present the Art as a method of demonstration, not recall.
